Julia Robinson Math Festival
Julia Robinson Mathematics Festivals (JRMF) inspire students to explore the richness and beauty of mathematics through activities that encourage collaborative, creative problem-solving. The festival provides an alternative to the competitive culture of math contests, with tables dedicated to different problems and activities, each with a mathematician standing by to offer guidance and encouragement without giving away too much. Says the Festival's Mathematics Director, Joshua Zucker, "We offer intriguing and challenging problems, puzzles, and activities, and a supportive setting for kids who like to take their time working on a problem. Students make whatever progress they make, they get help, they work with other kids, and eventually come to some kind of stopping point and go find another activity of interest."
Emory Math Circle is proud to host, in conjunction with JRMC, its Mathematics Festival in Fall 2024. The entire family is invited to come play math games and solve puzzles with us. This is an open-house event, so you may come and go whenever works best for your family. The Fall 2024 Emory Mathematics Festival will take place on Saturday, September 7, from 1 PM - 4 PM in the atrium of the Emory Math and Science Center.
American Mathematics Competitions (AMC)
The AMC are the first of a series of competitions in high school mathematics that determine the 6 person USA team for the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). There is also a stand-alone competition for middle school students. They are the most well-known and widely taken math competition in the US, and consist of 25 multiple choice questions. You can find past problems and solutions here.
AMC 8:
Can be taken by anyone in grade 8 or below who is below age 14.5 on the day of the competition.
The next AMC 8 competition will be held between January 22, 2025 and January 28, 2025.
AMC 10/12 A:
Can be taken by anyone in grade 10/12 or below.
Now takes place in November of each year.
Many high schools host, so will not be offered at Emory.
Top scorers qualify for participation in the AIME.
AMC 10/12 B:
Can be taken by anyone in grade 10/12 or below, even if they took the A version (or AMC 8). Please contact Max Auerbach with any questions by emailing maxwell(dot)auerbach(at)emory(dot)edu.
Most high schools do not host, so will be offered by Emory.
Top scorers qualify for participation in the AIME.
Math Kangeroo
Math Kangeroo is an international multiple choice contest lasting 75 minutes with fun and challenging questions for students in grades 1 - 12. The contest usually happens in March.
The participation fee is $21 (financial assistance is available) and includes a t-shirt, certificate, and gift in addition to a competition booklet and pencil on the test day.
Week of Mathematical Exploration
This program is for curious and self-directed students who want to go deeper into investigating a single mathematical topic or question than is possible in a regular math circle class. Under the mentorship of Emory graduate students, participants will get a taste of what it’s like to do mathematics research. The program ends with participants presenting on their findings to the rest of the group. Along the way, we’ll also set aside some time for fun group activities and guest speakers.
We have not yet decided on whether the program will run in summer 2024.
Atlanta Science Festival
The Atlanta Science Festival is an annual celebration of local science and technology. For one week in march, curious people of all ages will explore the science and technology in our region and see how science is connected to all parts of our lives in a variety of hands-on activities, facility tours, presentations, and performances throughout the metro Atlanta region. The Festival culminates in the free, family-friendly Exploration Expo - an interactive day of demos, hands-on activities, and stage shows at Piedmont Park.
Emory Math Circle often has a booth at the Exploration Expo; however, we always encourage our students to go!
